China is choking on its own success.

I am much a critic that so much is made overseas instead of here in the U.S. To further add to my disdain on foreign exports,as of late, there has been increased news of counterfeit products, including conterfeit medicine. Plus, with Chinese manufacturers still making toys out of lead... and not labeling that their possibly inferior products are made in China I see that China's success is causing even more destruction to our environment. I see that by them being a major industrial power they have set off an imbalance of much more than trade. In fact, a NY Times article points out that they are now choking on their own success.

"Much of the particulate pollution over Los Angeles originates in China! Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides spewed by China’s coal-fired power plants fall as acid rain on Seoul, South Korea, and Tokyo. Pollution has made cancer China’s leading cause of death, the Ministry of Health says. Chinese cities often seem wrapped in a toxic gray shroud. Only 1 percent of the country’s 560 million city dwellers breathe air considered safe by the European Union. "

Even as all this occurs, foreign investment continues to rise as multinational corporations build more factories in China.

But really they are just doing what other developed countries did. American and Britain, polluted their way to the top then the upper class demanded safe water and blue skies when it got to be too much.

So how bad is China? The NYT reports, "The level of such particulates is measured in micrograms per cubic meter of air. The European Union stipulates that any reading above 40 micrograms is unsafe. The United States allows 50. In 2006, Beijing’s average PM 10 level was 141, according to the Chinese National Bureau of Statistics. Only Cairo, among world capitals, had worse air quality as measured by particulates, according to the World Bank." BIG Water

I have not been one for drinking tap water yet at the same time it feels like I am being scamed to buy "BIG Water". Is deregulated water in the forseable future? What's next, pay for air? Oh, year... Oxygen Bars.

Ever seen that Jackie Chan movie about The Tuxedo, where companies are fighting for the sale of water? I want free water. Its just some days my water tastes more like my pipes or more like chlorine than water. And then there's my children and providing them with the best or the fact that I never receive notice on the day the fire department flushes the hydrants. Why do I have to listen to 1010 Wins in the morning to know if my water has been contaminated?

On the other hand, will I die from the tap water? The question reminds me of an old friend who said his sister caught Leukemia from the tap water and died as a result. That story still brings chills down my spine. By the time you find something wrong with water will it be too late? I can almost scare my self into giving up my city's well water. If the water is bad, would it be easier to sue Coca-Cola or an municipality?

Look all I am saying is that we still have some good drinking water left. It has not all turned to wormwood. We can't continue to pollute, dump garbage on the ground-- not caring where it ends up. Here is a link to an article on the Hackensack River. You'll see marvelous pictures of where some of my state's water comes from (tap water) and then where it ends up (I wouldn't gargle with this water). See how the river water by Ridgefield Park, NJ was considered for many years a dead zone for fish and how thousands of oysters are going to be added to the river water by the Meadowlands to clean the water.
